In 1890 the Fairfield Shipbuilding & Engineering Company, Ltd., Glasgow, but this single -screw steel mail steamer for
the Castle Line to South Africa. Arrenged to carry 160 first-class passengers, 100 second-class, and 100 third-class she was designed in conjunction with the Admiralty and could carry 1200 troops
as a transport. She was one of the last ships to have the first-class quarters.
